Amendment 22" by Joseph Heller is a classic of American literature, a satirical work that follows soldiers during World War II. The main character, Lieutenant Yossarian, is trying to survive in the face of military bureaucracy and absurdity. "Amendment 22" is the rule that a soldier, if he wants to avoid dangerous assignments, must admit to being insane. But if he realizes this and submits a statement about his madness in order to avoid combat missions, he, therefore, is already reasonable and, therefore, cannot avoid following orders. Heller explores with irony and sharp humor themes of the absurdity of war, bureaucracy and human stupidity.
