Valentin Grigorievich Shmelev - Biography

Shmelev (born March 11, 1901, passed away April 28, 1981) is a name that will remain in history as a prominent Russian writer, historian, public figure and wise thinker. His works, inspired by Russian history and culture, left an indelible mark on Russian literature and public consciousness. Valentin Grigorievich was born in the village of Oryol Province, Russian Empire, in the family of a priest. His childhood was permeated with religious and spiritual atmosphere, and this influence was reflected in his future work. After graduating from a local gymnasium, he entered the law faculty of Moscow University.

Valentine began his literary work in the early 1920s. His stories and stories attracted the attention of readers with their bright and deep artistry. He was one of the representatives of the literary trend known as "literary anachronism," which restored the connection with Russian culture and history after the 1917 revolution.

His most famous work is the novel "How Steel Was Tempered" (1932), which became legendary in Russian literature. In this work, he explored the Russian soul and culture through the prism of the biography of the peasant Pavlik Morozov, who refused to betray his parents to the authorities. The novel was perceived as a hymn of Russian courage and morality.

Shmelev actively participated in public life and historical events of his time. He was a staunch Orthodox Christian and criticized the anti-religious campaigns of the Soviet regime. This led to his arrest and exile in 1937.

During World War II, he served in front-line newspapers and continued his creative activity, inspiring soldiers with his works about the Motherland and the courage of Soviet soldiers.
