Thomas was born on 27 October 1728 in Marton-in-Cleveland, a small town in North Yorkshire, England. His childhood was spent in a simple family, and he received a basic education, which included reading, writing and navigation. These skills became the basis for his future career as a navigator.

In 1755, after several years of service on merchant and military ships, he joined the British Navy. This marked an important turning point in his life, as he began to participate in many expeditions and sea adventures.

The first years of Thomas Cook's service on the ships of the fleet were full of various experiences and adventures. His first important mission was to participate in an expedition to Canada in 1759, where he engaged in coastal mapping and saw action. His navigation skills and skill with maps made him a valuable crew member.

However, real fame came to Thomas Cook during his work on the Endeavour during James Cook's first naval expedition in 1768-1771. This expedition was aimed at studying the Pacific Ocean and the Southern Ocean. Thomas Cook was appointed second lieutenant on the ship and was given the opportunity to lead one of the groups of researchers.

During this expedition, many important discoveries were made. and his team explored the shores of New Zealand and contributed valuable geographic observations. They also made it to the east coast of Australia, where they conducted many surveys and mapped the coast. This journey made Thomas Cook a famous navigator and explorer.
