His first major work was the musical "Saturday Night," but due to various circumstances, he was not put on stage until many years.

Sondheim came to the attention of the music world in 1957 when his songs were included in the musical "West Side Story," a collaboration with Leonard Bernstein. This project was a huge success and brought fame and recognition to the young composer.
