Her first book, "The Road Through the Wall," was published in 1948. However, the real breakthrough was the novel The Lottery, published in 1948 in The New Yorker magazine. In it, Shirley Jackson expressed her skepticism of society and tradition, which made her famous and brought her to the attention of critics and readers.

The story of "Lotteray" brought Shirley worldwide fame and became her most famous work. In it, she explored themes of social conformism and violence, and the ending of the story left readers shocked. This work has become a classic of American literature and a mandatory object of study in schools and universites
