Warren began his literary career as a poet and wrote poetry that was recognized by critics and colleagues for its deep content and structural sophistication. He also engaged in teaching and wrote essays and critical works on literature.

However, Warren gained the greatest fame as a prose writer. His novel "All Queens" (1946) was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and became a classic work of American literature. In this novel, he explored complex relationships in the southern states of the United States in the post-Civil War period, presenting readers with deep psychological portraits of the characters.

Warren is also known for his other works, such as "Bright Places" (1929), "The Tempest" (1941), and "A Time of Violence" (1950). His literary style was characterized by a wealth of internal monologue and subtle moral reflections.
