Milan Kundera - Biography

Kundera was born on 1 April 1929 in Brno, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic). His childhood was overshadowed by the events of World War II and the subsequent communist era in Czechoslovakia. These events had a profound impact on his life and work.

Kundera studied at universities in Prague and Brno, where he studied literature and music. He also developed an interest in philosophy and art. During this time he began writing his first poems and short stories.

Milan began his literary career as a poet and writer. His early work was influenced by French existentialism and the Czech literary tradition. He wrote about human relations, fate and the meaning of life.

In 1967, he published his first novel, The Joke (Žert), which quickly became a bestseller and brought him worldwide fame. The novel tells about the life of the protagonist, Jaroslav Hasek, and his experience in communist Czechoslovakia. "Joke" was rated as a brilliant literary work, and - as one of the most important contemporary authors.

In 1975, after the invasion of Soviet troops in Czechoslovakia, Kundera emigrated to France and got a job as a teacher at the university. In France, he continued his literary work and began to write in French. His French novels, such as "Uninvited Kisses" ("Les Ignorants") and "Life is Another Name" ("La Vie est ailleurs"), also received critical and reader acclaim.

Milan is known for his philosophical approach to literature. He often explores questions of existence, freedom and the meaning of life in his works. His work is usually full of symbolism and philosophical reasoning.
