Malcolm was born on September 3, 1963 in Fairbanks, Alaska, USA. His parents were immigrants from Britain and Jamaica. After leaving school, Malcolm entered the University of Toronto, where he received a bachelor's degree in art history. He then went to Oxford University, where he studied sociology. His education is exceptionally versatile and prepared him for a future career in journalism and journalism.

Malcolm began his journalism career at the Canadian newspaper "The National Newspaper" and then moved to work at "The Washington Post."
