A French writer, archaeologist and publicist, Mérimée left an indelible mark on world literature with his writings and contributions to the study of Spanish culture and history. Luis Prospero was born on September 28, 1803 in Paris, France. He came from an educated family: his father was a historian, and his mother was a famous woman writer. From an early age he had a unique talent for languages ​ ​ and an interest in literature. He studied Latin, Greek and English, and took an interest in archaeology and art.

Mérimée began his literary career by writing poetry and publishing an article in literary magazines. His first publication was a satirical article published in 1825. Soon after, he began writing short stories and novels, which quickly attracted the attention of readers and critics.

One of the most famous works was the story "Carmen" (1845), which tells about a passionate and mysterious gypsy and her relationship with Sergeant Don Jose. "Carmen" became one of the most famous works of French literature and influenced many writers and composers.

Mérimée was not only a writer but also an archaeological scholar. His interest in ancient culture led him to research archaeological finds in many countries, including Greece and Spain. His works on archeology and art were recognized by scientists and specialists and left a valuable contribution to the study of ancient and medieval history and art.

One of the most important periods in life and work was his travels in Spain in the 1830s. During these trips, he collected materials and impressions that served as the basis for his famous "Letters on Spain." These "Letters" are a mixture of travel notes, essays, and artistic descriptions, and they are considered some of the best works about Spain in the 19th century.
