Luis Prospero was born on September 28, 1803 in Paris, France. He came from an educated family: his father was a historian, and his mother was a famous woman writer. Mérimée began his literary career by writing poetry and publishing an article in literary magazines. His first publication was a satirical article published in 1825. Soon after, he began writing short stories and novels, which quickly attracted the attention of readers and critics.

One of the most famous works was the story "Carmen" (1845), which tells about a passionate and mysterious gypsy and her relationship with Sergeant Don Jose. "Carmen" became one of the most famous works of French literature and influenced many writers and composers.
