The most famous and significant work of Lucius Apuleius is the novel "The Golden Donkey" (Metamorphoses, or Asinus Aureus), which he wrote in Latin. This novel is unique and a work that combines elements of psychological prose, philosophy, religious mysticism and comedy.

"The Golden Donkey" tells the story of a young man named Lucius, who, wanting to experience magical powers, turns into a donkey. The entire novel follows his adventures and search for a way to recapture human form. This piece explores a variety of topics including magic, religion, love, adventure, and soul transformation.

Lucius Apuleius was also a philosopher and interested in religious matters. His work "Metamorphoses" contains many elements of plutonic philosophy and religious rites, including initiations into the cult of the goddess Isis. At this time, the cult of Isis became popular in Rome, and Apuleius became an active supporter of this religious tradition.

Little is known about the personal life of Lucius Apuleius. He was married to one of the daughters of a wealthy Roman citizen and spent much of his life teaching philosophy and oratory. His status and education made him an important figure in the society of his time.
