In 1898 he joined the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party and began his active political activity. His education and language skills enabled him to become one of the party's leading leaders.

Leon played a key role in the October Revolution of 1917, which led to the overthrow of the interim government and the establishment of Bolshevik power in Russia. He was chairman of the Military Revolutionary Committee of the Petrograd Soviet, making him one of the main organizers and leaders of the revolution.

Despite their joint participation in the October Revolution, conflicts and disagreements subsequently arose between Leon Trotsky and Vladimir Lenin. One of the key disputes was related to the issue of building socialism in Russia. Trotsky supported the idea of ​ ​ a "world revolution" and believed that communism could only be built on a global scale. Lenin argued the need for "socialism in one country."
