John Clayton was born on February 20, 1947 in Garland, Texas, USA. He grew up in a believing family and from an early age was inspired by the principles of faith and moral values. In his youth, he attended the Faculty of Education at Ogletharp University in Ogletharp, Texas, and received a bachelor's degree in psychology.

After graduation, he continued his education and received a master's degree in psychology from the Academy for the Study of Psychology in San Antonio, Texas. His education in psychology and faith became the basis for his future work in leadership and personality development.

John Maxwell's career in leadership began in 1976 when he became an alumnus and chairman of INJOY, a training and leadership development company. In 1985, he founded his own organization, Equip, which focused on training and developing leaders in various areas of life and business.

However, the real breakthrough was his book "Developing the Leader Within You," published in 1992. This book became John Maxwell's first bestseller and brought attention to his work in leadership and development. He went on to write and publish over 100 books on the topics of leadership, personality development and motivation.
