After leaving school, John attended Oxford University, where he studied German language and literature. His education and knowledge of foreign languages became an important aspect of his future career as a spy writer.

After graduating from university, John Le served in British intelligence MI5 and MI6. John Le Carré began writing his first novels in the early 1960s, when he was still an active scout. His debut novel, "Spy, Get Out!" was published in 1963 under the pseudonym John Le Carré. This novel became an instant bestseller and immediately drew attention to a new author in the genre of spy literature.

One of John Le's most famous and popular novels is "The Spy Who Loved Me." This book was published in 1974 and became the basis for a popular television series and several film adaptations.
