John Hersey - Biography

Richard Hersey (June 17, 1914 - March 24, 1993) is a name associated with outstanding literary writing and journalistic wisdom. John was born in Tianjin, China, where his parents worked as missionaries. His family returned to the United States when he was still a young boy. They subsequently moved to Roseland, Massachusetts, where John spent most of his childhood and adolescence.

After graduating from high school, he entered Yalta University, where he studied English literature and writing. His education became the foundation for his future literary career, and at university he began to develop his writing talent.

After graduation, John began working in journalism. He has written for various publications including "Time" and "Life." His ability to scrutinize and deeply understand events made him a sought-after journalist.

During World War II, Hersey worked as a correspondent in Europe. His reporting on the war, concentration camps and urban destruction aroused enormous interest and earned him a reputation as an outstanding war journalist.

However, John's real fame was his report published in the New Yorker magazine in 1946 under the title "The Story of the Bombing of Hiroshima." This report talked about the consequences of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the lives of survivors of this disaster.
