John Burrufs - Biography

Burruffs (April 3, 1837 - March 29, 1921) was an American naturalist, author, and social activist who became known for his writings on natural history and the environment. Born into a rustic farming family in Catskill, New York, his early years were strongly associated with nature and farm life.

John spent many hours of his childhood exploring the surrounding forests, rivers and nature. This early connection with nature was the source of his passion for the environment and the natural sciences. At school, his teachers noticed his natural talent and encouraged him to learn and explore nature.

After graduating from high school, John attended Harvard College, where he studied science and literature. Education at Harvard greatly influenced his thinking and methods of nature exploration, as well as his ability to combine science and literature in his future work.

After graduating from college, John returned to Catskill and began working as a teacher. His real passion, however, was exploring and describing nature. He began publishing his articles and notes in various local newspapers and magazines, where they quickly attracted the attention of readers and critics.

His first book, "Wake-Robin," was published in 1871 and became a bestseller. In it, he described his observations of nature and the animal world in the vicinity of Catskill and shared his deep reflections on nature and the human connection with it. The book brought him fame and recognition as a nature writer.

John was one of the first American public figures to raise the need for conservation and the environment. His books and articles gave readers a sense of respect and responsibility to nature, and his voice was an important factor in the development of the conservation movement in the United States.
