Gottfried von was born on 1 July 1646 in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany. His parents were enlightened and educated people, and they encouraged Gottfried's interest in science and philosophy from an early age. Hoffmann went to university in Leipzig, where he studied law and philosophy. He soon became known for his abilities in mathematics and philosophy. His interest in philosophy led him to Hanover, where he became court philosopher for the Duke and Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg.
