Let's delve into the exciting biography of Hauptmann, consider his life, work and legacy.

Gerhart was born on 15 November 1862 in Olsztyn, in what was then East Prussia, now Poland. He grew up in a family of doctors and medical professionals, and his family environment had a profound impact on his understanding of medicine and human nature.

After leaving school, he devoted himself to the study of art and literature, which subsequently made him one of the most important literary voices of his time.

Gerhart is famous for his extensive literary heritage, including dramas, novels, and short stories. He began his career as a writer in 1889 with the publication of the novel "Thieves" ("Die Ratten"), which became the first part of his tetralogy "Hatter" ("Der Biberpelz"). This cycle of work raised social issues, shedding light on the life of the lower class in Germany.

However, Hauptmann found real fame as a playwright. His plays, such as "Last Night's Performance" ("Die letzten"), "The Street Kids" ("Die Waisenkinder") and "Tettau's Tetralogy" ("Tettauen-Tetralogie"), addressed topical social and moral issues. His work reflected the life and suffering of ordinary people in Germany, and also caused wide interest and discussion.

In 1912, Gerhart was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for "conquests in the field of dramatic literature." This recognition highlighted the importance of his contributions to literature and his ability to restlessly explore topical social and moral issues.
