Edward received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University and then a doctorate in English literature from Harvard University.

Side began his academic career teaching English literature at Columbia University. He was an enthusiastic literary scholar and analyst, and his research focused on American and English literature. However, his work gradually became broader, touching on issues of cultural and political identity, especially in the context of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
