Daphne Mary Lucille Du was born in London, UK, in the family of the famous actor Herald Du and his wife, actress Mabelle Griev. Daphne was the third child in the family and spent her early years often touring the theatre with her parents.

In the 1920s, the Du family moved to Cornwall, where Daphne began to comprehend the local nature and lifestyle, which had a profound impact on her future work.

Daphne Du Maurier began her literary career as a writer of short stories and articles. She wrote for various magazines and newspapers, but her real breakthrough was the novel Phenomenon (1931), which was well received by critics.

However, Daphne Du's most famous and acclaimed work was Rebecca (1938). This novel became a classic work of English literature and was adapted into a film by Alfred Hitchcock. "Rebecca" tells the story of a young woman marrying a rich and mysterious widower and confronting the mysteries of the past and the sinister shadow of his previous wife.
