Alexander was born on 24 July 1802 in Villers-Cotterres, a small town in France. He was the son of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a famous general and hero of the Napoleonic Wars. Due to his father's military background, the young Alexander spent a lot of time in various places in France where his father served.
