In this biography, we look at the life and work of Adrienne Rich, her contributions to literature and the fight for gender equality.

Adrienne was born on May 16, 1929, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Jewish immigrant parents. Her family valued education and culture, and Adrienne was introduced early into the world of literature and art. She began writing poetry as a child and went on to develop her literary talent at school.

In 1947, Adrienne attended Radcliffe College, part of Harvard, where she studied English literature and was exposed to important feminist ideas and movements. Her education became the foundation for her future literary and activist activities.

Adrienne Rich began publishing her poetry as a teenager and quickly rose to prominence in literary circles. Her poetic style was notable for the depth, emotionality and richness of the language. She has written about a variety of topics, including female identity, social injustice and politics.
