The Last Emperor (1987)

Pu Yi, an eight-year-old boy, is chosen for the throne in 1908 after the death of his father. He becomes the last emperor of the Qing dynasty and begins his life in the Forbidden City, surrounded by luxury and rituals, but deprived of freedom and real friends. Inside his luxurious peace, Pu Yi feels lonely and isolated, unable to enjoy childhood or share his joys and sorrows with the outside world.

Over time, Pu Yi witnesses changes in China, starting with the 1911 revolution and the end of the empire. He loses his position and power, soon becoming a simple citizen in the new republican China. The film covers this period of change, in which Pu Yi tries to find his place in the new world, freed from the shackles of the past and looking for his place in modern society.
