Kwai River Bridge (1957)

The film takes place in 1943 in Burma, where Japanese prisoners of war under the leadership of the Saito column are forced to build a bridge over the Kwai River for the railway line connecting Bangkok and Rangoon. The British officer, Colonel Nichols, is captured and becomes the chief engineer of the project. Despite his original principles and attitude towards military laws, Nichols became increasingly interested in the successful completion of the bridge, neglecting the lives of his soldiers and moral ideas.

The plot also follows attempts by British commandos, led by Major Wood, to destroy the bridge and disrupt Japanese military plans. While Saito tries to maintain discipline and order among his prisoners of war, the relationship between him and Colonel Nichols becomes increasingly tense due to the contradiction between duty and human feelings.

Ultimately, the bridge over the Kwai River becomes a symbol not only of the Japanese engineering workshop, but also of each character's internal struggle with his own beliefs and moral principles in a war.
