Green Mile (1999)
The plot takes place in 1935 in a prison suicide block known as the Green Mile in Louisiana. The protagonist, Paul Edgecombe, is a block chief whose job is to oversee convicts awaiting their execution in the electric chair. Although Paul is used to the cruelty and hopelessness of the place, his beliefs and moral principles begin to waver when John Coffey, a giant black man accused of murdering and forcibly raping two girls, arrives at the prison. At first, Paul and his colleagues are certain of John's guilt, but as they begin to learn his story and see his unusual gifts as a healer, their confidence begins to crack. It gradually becomes clear that John is not what society and prisoners see him to be. Not only is he innocent of the crimes he is accused of, he has the ability to heal people from their illnesses and suffering.
Paul finds himself in a difficult position in which he has to choose between good and evil, between justice and injustice. His friendship with John and his fortitude are severely tested, especially when it becomes clear that truth and justice may be unattainable goals in a world dominated by bias and corruption.
