Crime and punishment (1970)

The action takes place in St. Petersburg in the second half of the XIX century. The protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, a young and ambitious student, lives in poverty and is convinced of his intellectual superiority. Steeped in his thoughts on "extraordinary men," he comes to believe that some of them are entitled to a crime in the name of a "higher purpose."

Under the influence of these ideas, Raskolnikov commits the murder of an old percent-old woman, considering this action a necessary step towards his "outstanding personality" and "liberation from moral bonds." However, the crime committed haunts him, turning his life into a nightmare and forcing him to face his own guilt and moral doubts.

In parallel, the storyline follows Sonya Marmeladova, the daughter of a drunkard in love with Raskolnikov. Her sincere belief in human kindness and capacity for redemption serves as a contrast to murder and opens new avenues for the protagonist to understand herself and the world around her.

The plot of the film follows Raskolnikov's inner world, his struggle with his own demons and attempts to find a way to true redemption. Magnificent acting, gloomy atmosphere and deep philosophical reflections make this film an eternal classic of world cinema.
