Burnt by the Sun (1994)

The action takes place on one of the summer days of 1936 in the country house of a high-ranking officer of the Red Army, Kotov. He is enjoying time with family and friends when suddenly a mysterious visitor appears in their lives, posing as a family friend.

Apparently the harmless arrival of a stranger is the beginning of a series of events that reveal the terrible secrets of the past of Kotov and his family associated with political repression during the Stalinist regime. It gradually emerges that the visitor is an NKVD agent who has arrived to arrest Kotov.

In the dramatic events that take place throughout the day, the viewer learns the truth about what sacrifices were made and what painful compromises were made in the name of surviving the harsh conditions of political repression. The film explores the themes of betrayal, loyalty and human destiny in difficult times.
