Upendranath was born on 31 August 1910 in Brahmatola village located in Midnapore district of West Bengal, India. Upendranath attended a local school and developed an early interest in literature and writing. In 1930, he entered the College Presidency in Calcutta, where he studied English and literature. This education became the basis for his future literary career.

Upendranath Ashk began his writing career as a poet and wrote in Bengali. His poems were deeply inspired by nature, human feelings and philosophy. He was one of the most important representatives of the Kavya Sangrah, a literary movement whose goal was to unite traditional and modern literary forms.

However, his real fame came when he began writing prose. His short stories and novels became extremely popular and received acclaim from both readers and critics alike. He often explored themes of social justice, human passions and conflict, which made his works relevant and universal.
