Terry was born on 28 April 1948 in Beckenham, London, UK. His family moved to the town of Minehead, where little Terry spent his childhood. After graduating from high school, Terry entered Wilden-Shockbarch College, where he studied journalism. During this period he began writing for school newspapers and developing his style. Later, he moved to Bristol and began working as a journalist, including for the Western Daily Press and Bath Chronicle.
However, a real breakthrough in his career was his work in Fantasy and Science Fiction, where he began to publish his articles and reviews of science fiction works. This experience made him an expert in fantasy and science fiction.
Terry began his writing career by publishing a number of fantasy stories and novels. His first book, The Carpet People, was published in 1971 and was the first step towards creating his unique style and world. However, his real celebrity was the creation of the Discworld.
