Samuel Johnson - Biography

Johnson is a name that embodies the greatness of 18th-century English literature and intellectual culture. This eminent English writer, lexicographer, literary critic and scholar became one of the most important and influential figures of his time. In this biography we explore the life and work of a Johnson, his contribution to English literature and his important role in the literary and intellectual history of Great Britain.

Samuel was born on 18 September 1709 in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. His family was not wealthy, and he grew up under disadvantage. However, despite difficult circumstances, he proved himself to be a gifted student and quickly demonstrated his penchant for reading and learning.

After leaving school, he attended Pembroke College, Oxford, but family financial difficulties forced him to drop out. He returned to Litchfield and began working as a teacher and journalist.

Samuel began his literary career by publishing his essays and critical articles in London magazines and newspapers. He quickly gained attention for his sharp analyses and deep reflections on literature, culture and society.

In 1755, Samuel Johnson completed his most famous project - the creation of the first complete English dictionary, known as the A Dictionary of the English Language. This enormous work is considered a masterful work and has become an important contribution to the standardization and normalization of the English language. Johnson's dictionary had a huge influence on the development of the English language and became a model of lexicography.

In addition to the dictionary, Samuel was also known for his literary works. His essays, including The Rambler and The Idler, became important texts of literary criticism and philosophy. He also wrote biographies of great English writers, including Shakespeare and Milton.
