Richard Laurin was born on March 26, 1957, in Newark, New Jersey, United States. His family was working-class and he grew up in a hardworking and educated environment. Richard received his bachelor's degree from Rutorford State University in 1979, majoring in economics. He then continued his education with his master's and Ph.D. degrees from Rutgers University.
