Rex Todhunter was born on December 1, 1886 in Nobleville, Indiana, USA. He grew up in a family where reading and education were valued, and young Rex quickly became a passionate reader. His parents encouraged his literary interests and allowed him to read a wide range of books.

After leaving school, Rex entered the University of Kent (Kenyon College), where he studied literature and classics. Here he also began his writing career, publishing poetry and short stories in a university newspaper. Upon graduation, he moved to New York and began working in various fields, including publishing and advertising. These experiments and knowledge were useful to him in the future when creating his literary works.

Rex Stout began his writing career by publishing short stories and novels in magazines and newspapers. His first novel, How Like a God, was published in 1929. However, he began to enjoy real popularity with the appearance of the character Niro Wolfe.

The first novel about Niro Wolfe, Fer-de-Lance, was published in 1934. Niro Wolfe is a brilliant detective with eccentric traits: he is a gourmet orchid lover, does not leave his house and rarely meets clients.
