After graduating from high school, Raymond went to Blackburn College in England, where he studied journalism and classical literature. His education also included the study of English literature and languages, which played an important role in shaping his literary style.
After returning to the United States, Raymond Chandler worked in various fields, including military service during the First World War and later work in the oil industry. He also tried various professions before deciding to devote himself to a literary career.
Raymond began his literary career relatively late, at the age of 44, when he published his first story, Blackmailers Don't Shoot, in Black Mask magazine in 1933. This story was the beginning of his landmark series about private detective Philip Marlowe.
