Equian Biography: A Champion of Human Rights and Overcoming Suffering

Olauda (born October 10, 1940) is a name that has become a symbol of the struggle for human rights, equality and justice. This prominent Nigerian leader and human rights activist faced life's difficulties and hellish conditions of slavery, but was able to overcome them and become a symbol of hope and struggle. Olauda was born in the village of Afon, in the Nigerian state of Akwa Ibom. His family was part of the Ibibio tribe, and he was the seventh of ten children in the family. Even as a young man, Olauda felt the weight of African slavery and colonial oppression.

In 1967, aged just 26, Olauda was kidnapped and sold into slavery. His terrible experiences and suffering as a slave, including bullying and abuse, changed his life and view of the world forever. It was a period of his life that could have broken the spirit of many, but Olauda decided to fight and fight against lawlessness.

For more than five years, Olauda Ekwian was held in slavery until he was finally rescued by Amnesty International members. This event opened up new opportunities for him and was the impetus for his struggle for human rights.

After his release, Olauda decided to fight for the rights of former slaves and against slavery in all its forms. He founded the Former Slaves Relief Fund and began speaking to the global community, raising the issue of slavery in Nigeria and other African countries.
