Neville Shute - Biography

The Jester (Nevil Shute), real name Jester Norwich, was born on 17 January 1899 in Elderton, London, England. He became known as one of the most popular and widely read English writers of the 20th century, but his life and career were much more diverse and interesting than one might imagine.

Neville grew up in an engineering family and his interest in mechanics and aviation was evident from an early age. After leaving school, he went to the College of Engineering in London and trained as an electrical engineer. His education and passion for aviation became the basis for future achievements.

During the First World War, Neville served in the Royal Corps of Engineers and worked in the field of military aviation. His background in aviation and engineering proved important to his future career and inspired him to create literary works about aerial adventures.
