Max was born in Cologne, Germany in 1891. His parents maintained his interest in art from his earliest years. He began painting and experimenting with various art techniques as a child. He later entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Bonn, but his artistic interests went beyond traditional education.

Early in his career, Max was active in the Dadaism movement, which protested against traditional artificial values and imagery. This movement called for absurdity, chaos and disorder, and became one of its important representatives.

His works from this period, such as "Font" and "Mount St. Victor," were full of experiments with textures and forms, making them cult works of the Dadaist era.
