Lewis Wallace is a name that will forever be associated with one of the most famous novels in American literature and cinema - Ben-Hur. This American writer, soldier and diplomat left his mark on history not only through his literary work, but also through his contributions to American history and culture. In this biography, we delve into the life and work of Lewis Wallace, explore his influence on literature, and appreciate the importance of his writing.

Lewis was born on April 10, 1827 in Brookville, Indiana, in the United States. He was the seventh child in the Wallace family. His father, David Wallace, was a farmer and teacher, and his mother, Esther Francis, managed to ensure the education of her son and inspire him to love literature and art.

Lewis attended various schools and colleges, but his education was fairly modest. Nevertheless, he developed an interest in reading and studying history, which would play an important role in his future literary career.

At the beginning of the American Civil War, Lewis Wallace was appointed adjutant to General John Framont and participated in several military operations. He was also the second assistant adjutant to General William H. Lewis and was subsequently promoted to the rank of major general. Wallace distinguished himself as a bold and determined leader in battles such as the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Monterey, and the Battle of Fort Donelson.

At the end of the war, Lewis received the glory of a military hero and was awarded the rank of major general. His military exploits and experiences of military service had a profound impact on his late literary career, and many of his works had military themes.
