In 1940, Kurt Vonnegut entered Cornell University, but his education was interrupted after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Vonnegut volunteered for the front and became a soldier in the American army. He saw action in Europe during World War II and was even captured during the Battle of Baston.

In captivity, Kurt faced the horrors of war and witnessed the bombing of Dresden. This experience became the basis for his most famous work, the novel Slaughterhouse-Five, in which he described the bombing and its impact on the psyche of soldiers.
