Karl was born on August 25, 1918, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to Jewish immigrants from Ukraine. Already in early childhood, his musical abilities manifested themselves, and his parents decided to support his hobby. He later entered Harvard University, where he studied music and composition. There, his creative potential became more apparent, and he began to create his first musical works.

After graduation, Carl moved to New York City to pursue a professional music career. He was accepted into the Design Works of the United States Supreme Court, but his real passion has always been music.

A serious rise in his career came in the 1940s, when Karl Bernstein began working at the New York Philharmonic under the direction of the great conductor Leonard Bernstein (who, incidentally, was not his relative).
