Joseph Albert was born on May 1, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a family of Jewish immigrants from Russia and Poland. In 1942, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Joseph volunteered to serve in the US Army. He trained as a navigator pilot and served as a second lieutenant in a bomber squadron. Military service became an important experience for him and was the subject of his first novel.

Joseph's most famous and influential work was Catch-22, published in 1961. This novel became a symbol of the absurdity of military bureaucracy and the senselessness of war. It tells the story of a bomber squadron during World War II and the protagonist, Captain John Joseph Yosarian, tries to find a way to avoid sorties while facing absurd rules and paradoxes.

"Catch-22" became a literary event and aroused great interest among both readers and critics. The novel became a symbol of the anti-war movement and expressed dissatisfaction with the war and bureaucracy. It was filmed and had a huge impact on the culture and literature of the 1960s.
