Jonathan Swift - Biography

Jonathan Swift is a name that has become a symbol of sharp mind, irony and satire in world literature. This Anglo-Irish writer, theologian and politician left an indelible mark on history as a master of word and thought. In this biography, we look at key moments in Swift's life and work.

Jonathan was born on 30 November 1667 in Dublin, Ireland. His parents were English colonists, and he spent his childhood in poverty. educated at Trinity College, Dublin and began his career in the clergy, but soon realized that his vocation was word and literature.

Swift rose to prominence for his literary and political talents. He served as secretary to Lord William Temple and carried out diplomatic missions in London. His wit and dexterity in verbal debate made him a popular and recognized public figure.

Jonathan became famous for his works, in which he sharply and satirically ridiculed the social and political problems of his time. His best-known works include Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal, and The Battle of the Books. In these works he exposed the greed, ignorance and hypocrisy of society.

One of Swift's more famous works is "Gulliver's Travels," in which he describes the adventures of his hero, Lemuel Gulliver, in four different countries, each an allegory for different aspects of human nature and society. This work has become a classic of world literature and is still read and discussed.

Swift was active in the political events of his time and campaigned for Irish rights, fighting against English colonial politics in Ireland. He wrote a series of pamphlets known as Drapier's Letters, in which he opposed English monopoly and defended the rights of the Irish.
