John Ray was born on April 27, 1945 in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. His childhood was spent in the warm atmosphere of South Florida, and this area had a profound influence on his work. John grew up in a large family and at an early age showed interest in reading and literature.

After leaving school, John entered the University of Florida, where he studied English literature. During this time he also developed an interest in journalism and began writing articles for the university newspaper.
