John Ray Jr. was born on February 8, 1955, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the son of Virginia housewife Winifred and concrete worker John Ray Graysham Sr. His childhood was spent in the small town of Southaven, Mississippi, where he witnessed many trials and was passionately interested in justice at an early age.

After graduating from Southern Mississippi University, John entered Mississippi Law School, where he received a bachelor's degree in law. After graduation, he went to work as an attorney in the small town of Satola, Mississippi, where he encountered a number of legal cases that became the inspiration for his future novels.

He worked as a barrister for over a decade, handling civil and criminal cases. This professional activity gave him a deep understanding of the American legal system, which he later successfully used in his books.

John Graysham made his literary debut in 1989 with the release of his first novel, A Time to Kill. This book was about a lawyer defending an African-American client accused of murdering two white men, and it was inspired by real events John observed in Mississippi.
