John Ray Jr. was born on February 8, 1955, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the son of Virginia housewife Winifred and concrete worker John Ray Graysham Sr. His childhood was spent in the small town of Southaven, Mississippi, where he witnessed many trials and was passionately interested in justice at an early age.
After graduating from Southern Mississippi University, John entered Mississippi Law School, where he received a bachelor's degree in law.
