Jane was born on September 6, 1860, in Sedwick, Illinois, to a middle-class family. Her parents, Sarah and John Addams, instilled in her the values of social justice and education. In 1889, Jane Addams and her friend Ellen Gates Starr Stevens established Hull House, the first American center for social assistance and education. Hull House became an activity and learning center for immigrants and the poorest in Chicago. It provided services of medical care, education, cultural enrichment and legal support.

Jane was an active supporter of social reform and the struggle for women's rights. She participated in the movement for the right to vote for women and was one of the most important figures of this movement. Her work at Hull House and community service contributed to improving the living conditions of many Americans, especially immigrants and women.
