After graduating from high school, she attended the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she studied sociology. Hilary Mantel's first book, Every Day is Mother's Day, was published in 1985. This novel, like many of her subsequent works, addresses the theme of family relations and the psychology of heroes. He was the beginning of her career, but real recognition came to her later.

An important career event was the novel "The Daily Life of Thomas Cromwell" ("Wolf Hall"), published in 2009. This book chronicles the life and career of Thomas Cromwell, King Henry VIII's closest adviser, and was the first part of the Cromwell trilogy. The novel received the Man Booker Prize and drew attention to Mantel's work.
