Hans Christian was born on April 2, 1805 in the city of Odense, on the island of Funen, in Denmark. His childhood was difficult and devoid of luxury. He grew up in a poor family and became an orphan after the death of his father. These difficulties of childhood had a profound impact on his later work, and many of his tales reflect the theme of poverty and internal struggles.

Hans's abilities for literature manifested themselves early, and he was sent to Copenhagen in the hope of receiving a good education and starting a literary career. He enrolled at Slotsholmen School, where his talent was noticed. With the help of a scholarship, he attended school and studied for many years.

However, Hans's real passion was for travel. In 1833, he went on a journey through Europe, visiting Germany, France, Italy and other countries. His travel experiences inspired many works, including fairy tales and stories based on the culture and nature of different countries.

Andersen's first book to gain popularity was "Tales Told to Children." It was published in 1835 and included such famous tales as "The Princess on the Pea" and "The Grasshopper Pot." This book was Hans' first step towards literary success.
