The first works did not bring him much fame. His debut novel, Madame Bovary, was published in 1857 and caused a scandal in society with its outspoken criticism of the morals and morality of the bourgeoisie. However, the novel became a great success and is considered one of the greatest works of world literature. He explored themes of passion, ambition and moral degradation among the society of his time.
