Gertrude was born on February 3, 1874, in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, to wealthy Jewish immigrants. Her family moved to Baltimore, Maryland when Gertrude was a child. From an early age she showed an interest in literature and art.
After graduating from high school, Gertrude attended Radcliffe College, part of Harvard, where she studied psychology and English literature. Her education gave her the basis for her future literary career.
Gertrude Stein became known for her literary experiments and innovative writing style. Her first major work, The Requirement of Life (Three Lives), was published in 1909 and had a significant impact on the development of modern prose. Her style, characterized by repetition and stream of consciousness, became one of the characteristic features of modernism.
In the early 20th century, Gertrude and her brother Leo became the center of a cultural and intellectual salon in Paris that attracted such talented artists and writers as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Pablo Picasso. This salon became a forum for the discussion and development of new ideas in art and literature and made a significant contribution to modernism.
