George MacDonald Fraser's childhood and youth were spent in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1824. He was the seventh child in the family and grew up in an environment of rugged Scottish landscapes and a rich literary tradition. These influences were instrumental in shaping his personality and artistic taste.
