Ezra Loomis Lummis was born on October 30, 1885 in Galesburg, Illinois, USA. He grew up in a family of educated parents who encouraged his interest in literature and music. From an early age he showed a talent for writing and poetry.

After graduating from high school, Ezra entered the University of Pennsylvania, and then moved to Harvard University, where he studied classical philology and English literature. His education greatly influenced his future career as a poet and critic.

Early in his career, Ezra wrote poetry inspired by the English Romantic tradition, but over time his style and views began to change. He became one of the important figures of modernism and began experimenting with the form and structure of poetry.

He was also active in literary criticism and made substantial contributions to American and world literary culture. His essays and critical works such as "Literary Cubism" and "The Constitution of Canadian Confederation" became important documents of modernist literature.

Ezra was one of the most contro-versial figures in world literature. His political beliefs and actions during World War II led to his arrest and charges of treachery. He was detained and spent more than 12 years at St. Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital in Virginia.
